Barcelona took a crucial step forward in their fight to secure home-court advantage in the playoffs, while Gran Canaria slipped further in their battle to avoid the bottom two spots.
After watching the game, it’s clear why each team is fighting for what they are. Barcelona, plagued by absences, cruised to an easy victory without ever really being tested by their opponent.
Kevin Punter exploded in the first half with a sensational performance, and Barcelona’s interior game took over in the second, including Youssoupha Fall. That was more than enough to sink a disheartened Gran Canaria. Only Chimezie Metu, and only early on, rose to the occasion.
With Barcelona severely depleted—Vesely, Laprovittola, Satoransky, Clyburn, and Kosturica all out—it was clear that Kevin Punter would need to play an even more decisive role than usual. And perhaps spurred by Hezonja’s incredible performance earlier today, the Bronx native took the bull by the horns.
Punter scored 15 of Barcelona’s first 17 points in just over six minutes. Barcelona started with a solid lead, but Gran Canaria quickly erased it thanks to a player who once earned applause at the Palau. Chimezie Metu reminded everyone of his best days in a Barcelona jersey, leading a Gran Canaria side that was trailing from the outset (17-16).
Despite Metu matching Punter’s excellent level, Barcelona built a comfortable lead through their second unit. Brizuela started scoring, Willy Hernangómez hurt them inside, and Juan Núñez provided quick transitions. But above all, Gran Canaria’s bench was clearly inferior (29-20).
The game slowed down in the second quarter, which suited a short-handed Barcelona as they dominated inside. With Metu under tighter watch, the visitors’ offensive production dwindled, and when Punter returned to the court, he confirmed he was in top form: 20 points at halftime (48-34).
From then on, the game followed a very comfortable path for Barcelona. Gran Canaria offered little resistance, showed weak mentality, and when the deficit grew, the team simply disappeared. By the end of the third quarter, the entire team’s valuation stood at just 29 credits. Meanwhile, Barcelona continued to exploit the interior game with Tornike Shengelia scoring at will. Before the third quarter ended, both the score and the vibe signaled an inevitable result (65-41).
Nothing changed in the final ten minutes. Barcelona kept exploiting Gran Canaria’s porous defense—this time Fall was the main beneficiary—while coach Pascual decided to give extensive minutes to Juan Núñez, a positive sign. He also brought in Dani González and Sayo Keita, both juniors, giving them nearly four minutes on the court.
