Hoshoryu (26, Tatsunami stable) has been forced to withdraw from the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament starting on Day 2. The yokozuna injured his right hamstring during his Day 1 bout against Takayasu and submitted a medical report confirming the diagnosis.
His stablemaster, former komusubi Asahoyo (Tatsunami), spoke to reporters at Ryogoku Kokugikan to provide an update on the wrestler’s condition. The following is a summary of the key questions and answers from the interview.
**When did you decide on the withdrawal?**
“He came back right after the bout. He couldn’t walk. This morning, he went to the hospital.”
**What did you say to him after deciding to withdraw?**
“I told him, ‘It can’t be helped.’ He said, ‘I’m sorry.'”
**What about the Paris tour?**
“Well, the main tournament is the priority. It’s still uncertain.”
**Given the significance of this tournament, he must recover properly.**
“Yes, exactly. I really hoped he would win the championship… It was an opportunity, but he’s probably the one who feels that the most.”
**Has he had a muscle tear before?**
“This is likely his first time, at least in this area.”
